The Ten Commitments of Group Work
"Group" is any combination of individuals in a relationship pursuing a common goal or purpose. It might be a department, section, work group, team, family, etc. "Group" work is a level above "team" work.
- Do not gossip about another group member. Gossip creates an unseen poison that hurts us and those about whom we gossip.
- Never, never, never criticize another group member aloud or even silently to oneself. Criticism is a most virulent poison for any relationship, and especially where people are working together for a common purpose.
- Never be late for any scheduled meeting. To do so is a subtle form of disrespect for one's fellow workers.
- Never miss a planned meeting unless it is impossible to attend, even if personal sacrifices have to be made. Making personal sacrifices, without letting anyone know of the sacrifice (and without thinking of it as a sacrifice), is a way of building commitment to Purpose and manifesting character.
- Never engage in heated argument with a fellow group member. Instead, in times of disagreement,
• use open, non-critical discussion, and
• release all attachments to the end result or decision.
- Keep a positive attitude toward the work and toward each group member participating in the work.
- Look for and find positive qualities about each group member, then use thought to energize those positive qualities. Such discovery and recognition may or may not be verbalized. But thinking about them positively helps create an environment that supports and increases those qualities in them.
- Make every effort to keep the larger picture and Purpose of the work in mind. Even when mentally or emotionally focused on specific issues, the larger Purpose can help guide the process and the interactions. By doing this, learn to "see in two directions at the same time." This helps increase overall awareness and strengthens self-confidence.
- Daily use the power of thought and visualization to see the larger Purpose being unfolded, the Purpose for the group's being together.
- Make a strong, personal commitment to respect, honor and uphold the work and its Purpose. See that Purpose, not oneself, as the most important reason for being a part of this work, whatever form that work may take.
